Court affirms sentence in assault on 'snitch'
A retired Mesa County judge did not overstep his authority in imposing consecutive terms in prison, adding up to 70 years, in the case of a man convicted of slicing another man's throat in a 1995 drug investigation, the Colorado Court of Appeals said Thursday. Paul Eugene Inman, now 50, is serving a 70-year sentence stemming from convictions for attempted first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, first-degree assault, possession of drug paraphernalia, and two sentence-enhancing crime of violence convictions, all related to an assault against another man near the Colorado River at 29 Road in June 1995.
Sheriff: Inmate at jail accused in escape plot
An inmate at the Mesa County Jail was formally accused Thursday of plotting an escape from the facility, including alleged plans to assault a sheriff's deputy. Ryan Thompson, 21, was advised on a sheriff's warrant listing felony counts of attempt to escape and conspiracy to commit escape, after an informant inside the jail told authorities Thompson was openly discussing aspects of an alleged escape plot, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

Beware of debris in river, officials warn
People floating and re-creating on the river should stay river right where the channel splits close to Interstate 70 almost due south of 20 1/2 Road. Mesa County sheriff's officials are warning river runners to stay away from a debris field that has formed in a channel of the Colorado River downstream of the Blue Heron boat ramp.
No charges are to be filed against ex-teacher
A former choir teacher at Grand Junction High School who resigned after receiving a substantial financial settlement will not face criminal charges after a police investigation reviewed by the Mesa County District Attorney's Office. Marcia Wieland resigned her position only after receiving a settlement approved by the Mesa County District 51 school board paying her $27,760 among other considerations.

Water plan better than brinksmanship, representatives say

Motorcyclist who died in crash ID'd
A 60-year-old Grand Junction man was identified on Sunday by the Mesa County Coroner's Office as the motorcyclist killed in a Saturday afternoon crash. Gary Willis died from the injuries he received after his motorcycle crashed into the side of a truck about 3 p.m. in the area of D Road and East Grove Drive, according to the Grand Junction Police Department.
Inmate uses a dump truck in escape try
A Mesa County convict was the subject of a manhunt after reportedly escaping Thursday afternoon from the Trinidad Correctional Facility. Douglas Beagley, 62, who had been serving an 18-year sentence for convictions in 2004 for burglary and vandalism, was last seen around 3:20 p.m. Thursday and had been assigned to an outside work crew at the prison, operating a white Ford dump truck with emblems of the Colorado Department of Corrections, state officials said.

Mesa County commissioners voted Monday to wait until Aug. 10 to consider establishing a new sewer improvement district on the Redlands, after neighbors told commissioners just one property owner with a failed septic system is rooting for the district's creation. Commissioners were to decide Monday whether to create the Redlands Club Sanitary Sewer Improvement District on five properties west of the Redlands Community Center at 2457, 2459, 2451, 2453 and 2455 Broadway.
