When copper was (almost) king

Early in 1898, when nearly every community in Colorado was hoping for the next great motherlode, people in Mesa County thought they'd found it: Copper had been discovered in Unaweep Canyon. "Bigger than the Klondike," blared a Feb. 8, 1898, headline in The Daily Sentinel.
