On a day set aside to honor Martin Luther King Jr., Colorado Mesa University and several community members have collaborated on a series of events today to recognize several locals who embody the spirit of King and give the public a chance to show its support of the slain civil rights leader's dream of equality. Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day across the country, and local festivities begin at 12:30 p.m. with a Symbolic March from City Hall, 250 N. Fifth St., to Handy Chapel, 200 White Ave., that will take marchers along Main Street and up First Street, said David Combs, a part of CMU's Cultural Advisory Committee, the Black Citizens & Friends of Mesa County and Friends of Handy Chapel.
