Program lets 'low-risk' inmates out without bond

A National Institute of Corrections pilot program is helping one Colorado county to not only hold more dangerous offenders in jail, but also release those who aren't likely to offend again while waiting for their court dates. Judges in seven counties nationwide, including Mesa County in Colorado, assess risk, and determine bond amounts, based on factors including employment, drug and alcohol addiction, and support from family and friends, as well as the offense itself, and the suspect's criminal history.
